Christopher Scanlan is a lifelong entrepreneur and nationally recognized leader in the affordable housing sector, with more than two decades of experience as an owner, operator, investor, and advisor in multifamily real estate.
Mr. Scanlan began his career early, launching a drafting and design business while still in high school before acquiring his first business-a struggling dry-cleaning operation-at the age of 20.
After successfully expanding and selling that venture, he transitioned into real estate investment, acquiring his first multifamily property at age 21. Over time, he built, managed, and repositioned a portfolio of more than 125 apartment units while also earning recognition as a top-producing real estate broker and serving on the Board of Directors for his local Realtor Association.
In 2008, Mr. Scanlan joined Marcus & Millichap, where he developed a deep expertise in affordable housing transactions. During his tenure, he identified a significant gap in the marketplace-specifically, a lack of competition and specialization in the affordable housing brokerage space that was resulting in substantial unrealized value for property owners.
In many cases, he observed pricing disparities ranging from $600,000 to over $2,000,000 per asset. Recognizing this inefficiency, Mr. Scanlan founded The LIHTC Group, Inc. in 2010 with a clear mission: to deliver superior outcomes for owners of affordable housing through targeted marketing, competitive buyer outreach, and a more agile, client-focused approach.
Under his leadership, The LIHTC Group has grown into a nationally respected brokerage and advisory firm, with offices in Chicago and Naples, Florida, and a team of experienced professionals from leading institutions including Marcus & Millichap and CBRE. Building on this foundation, Mr. Scanlan has now expanded his focus beyond brokerage into direct investment through the launch of Berkley Capital Advisors.
This platform reflects the natural evolution of his career-from identifying value and advising clients, to actively acquiring and operating multifamily communities alongside investors.
Through Berkley Capital Advisors, Mr. Scanlan is focused on acquiring and preserving senior affordable housing communities that offer both strong financial performance and meaningful social impact. His approach combines deep market knowledge, disciplined underwriting, and a commitment to aligning investor returns with community outcomes.
